The Local Area

Nnamdi Azikiwe University has two campuses: Awka and Nnewi. The Nnewi campus is home to the College of Health Sciences and other related medical courses, while Awka, the main campus, hosts the other faculties of the University: Arts, Engineering and Technology, Education, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Both towns are quite accessible with good road networks. There are so many local mass transit buses that commute easily between the two towns.

The Awka Campus is along the Onitsha-Enugu express road. This position makes it easy for both road and air users. It is about 60km from Enugu city (capital of Enugu State, and the former headquarters of Eastern Nigeria). Enugu has one of the best airports in Nigeria. Traveling from Enugu to Awka by road takes less than 40 minutes. Onitsha is about 35km west of Awka and about 30km south-east of Nnewi. Onitsha is reputed to have the leading market in West Africa and a great place for shopping.

Nnewi has come to the cynosure of all eyes as the technological base of Nigeria. It is the seat of many factories and commercial activities—home to many great industrial companies.

Other places of interest very near to Awka and Nnewi are the Ogbunike cave, Igboukwu museum and the Nri dynasty that spans over 2000 years. So, if you are interested in history and archaelogical sites, being in Nnamdi Azikiwe University affords you the opportunity to explore these places.

Awka also is an ancient city noted for blacksmithing. Awka has an atmosphere of culture all of its own, mainly due to the different festivals and events that take place there and around its environs every year. Notable among these festivals are the famous Imo Awka, Nwafor Ogidi and Uzo Iyi Umuoji. Nnewi also celebrates annually the famous Ofiaolu festival — a festival it shares with neighbouring towns, such as Nnobi. These events are evidence of the great cultural heritage of the Igbo people of Nigeria.

Away from all these beehive of activities are the University campuses, which are communities of their own with their sports facilities providing the needed recreation for students. in many ways, this diversity in Awka and Nnewi makes Nnamdi Azikiwe University a perfect place to enjoy being a student.
