THE SCHOOL OF GENERAL STUDIES

The School of General Studies of Nnamdi Azikiwe University aims at providing the intellectual knowledge and training that prepare students for life within and outside the University. This kind of refinement and pruning ensures that a graduate from any particular discipline/faculty can perform any function(s) assigned to him, first as a student and later as a graduate, his specialized area of study notwithstanding. Some of the objectives of the programme include:-

  • To prepare and equip students for a more meaningful academic work.
  • To provide the academic and intellectual stimulation derivable from the study of all the courses offered in it, which are necessary requirements for the development of a sound mind.
  • To give students a closer insight into the environment, to ensure that before he settles down in his area of specialization, he is exposed to major areas of learning in the Humanities, Natural Science, Nigerian People’s & Culture, Social Science, Use of English, Logic and Philosophy.
  • The course, Use of English, will equip the students with a fairly satisfactory linguistic background which they need in their areas of specialization both within and outside the University.
  • To programme the students in the understanding of their environment and in mastering it.
  • General studies courses also expose students to the culture and Nigerian peoples.

In order to achieve these goals, four courses were introduced namely:-

1. English : GS 101 and 102: Use of English
