Basic Medical Sciences
WELCOME TO FACULTY OF Basic Medical Sciences

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is committed to preparing students for a career in medicine and associated career paths. It is a multidisciplinary faculty designed to deliver the basic sciences curriculum to first year medical students as well as to perform cutting edge biomedical research. It has three departments: Anatomy,  Human Biochemistry  and Human Physiology  which offers intensive copurses in anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry/molecular biology, biomedical informatics, cancer biology, cell and developmental biology, genetics, immunobiology, microbiology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology and physiology .These courses provides a world-leading research environment for the Medical Sciences. Programmes are only for Bachelor Degree(Regular).

Vision

“To train competent scientists who can fit into and function effectively in scientific research, practice and in delivery of quality scientific services for the advancement of our larger society”

 Mission Statement

The Faculty of Basic Medical Science is poised to foist and foster learning in a functional way teaching with the best learning strategies and current contents of scientific knowledge in a way that will enable graduates of its programmes develop the requisite skills and attitudes of a universal scientist and can fit in and function effectively in the comity of scientists. The Faculty shall do this with utmost respect for the differences in the learning preferences of individuals and shall continue to review both its curricular contents and strategies of their implementation. The mission is thus to train scientist with the right attitudes, skills and knowledge (ASK).

 Objectives:

The course is designed to provide a comprehensive training in Human Anatomy in line with the current trend of development in Biomedical Sciences. The aim is to equip the graduate with all round up-to-date knowledge in Human Anatomy. This programme is therefore planned to prepare a cadre of teachers/assistant lecturers, and postgraduate students to fill the lacunae in the discipline of Human Anatomy in various institutions in the country and in the rest of the world.

At the end of the training, the graduates are expected to have acquired a sound background of the theoretical knowledge and proficiency in the practical aspects of the subjects – that will prepare them for a career in any field of Anatomy, and also make them eligible for post graduate pursuit in the discipline.

 Admission Requirements:

i           Admission through University Matriculation Examination. Candidates should pass the School certificate Examination (S.S.C.E or GCE) O’level with credit in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English language obtained in not more than two sittings.

ii          Direct entry: The candidate must have  requirements, stated above, advanced level G.C.E. in 2 subjects of Chemistry, Physics and Biology (or Zoology or Botany) OR a degree in Biological sciences or  any degree which may be considered to be equivalent to the above qualifications.
