THE Nnamdi Azikiwe University Auditorium was filled to the brim on Thursday, April 10, 2008 as the Faculty of Arts hosted Prof. Ilochi A. Okafor, SAN to a valedictory send-forth.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Okey Umeh said that they gathered to “honour the Vice-Chancellor who has given UNIZIK a pride of place in the comity of Universities”. He said that for the first time in the history of the University, Staff and Students were given the opportunity to be Computer literate, tables and other reading facilities were provided for them, all departments of the faculty received full accreditation, the nominal roll of Professors in the faculty jumped to thirteen from two, springing up day-by-day of buildings and the granting of approvals to staff to attend International Conferences.

To some Staff of the faculty Professor Ilochi Okafor (SAN) represents diverse things to them. Prof Dukor of the Philosophy Department described him as a “Man of the Universe who epitomizes truth, hardwork and excellence” To Dr. Joy Eyisi, Head, Department of English, Prof. Okafor is an “ICT Fanatic”. To Prof. Onyekaonwu, the Vice-Chancellor is a great achiever, while Prof. Anagbogu said that he was the only Vice-Chancellor that supports the promotion of Igbo Language amongst the Vice-Chancellors in the South East region.

Also a lot of encomiums were heaped on the Vice-Chancellor by various Heads of Departments. Some described him as a wonderful achiever; humility personified.

During the event, the Department of Theatre Arts and Music kept the audience spell bound with their spice of entertainment of drama and musical performances.

The Vice Chancellor received several gifts. The wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Lady Egosonwa Okafor and other Principal Officers were not left out in the gift galore. It was during the gift presentation that the Dean said that the best universities in the world started with the faculty of Arts. He enjoined the staff to be proud as they are in the forefront of humanizing the world.

To cap up the presentations, the thirteen Professors in the faculty presented a Special Leadership Award to the Vice-Chancellor for his support to the faculty.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the faculty for honouring him. To the students he charged them to be hardworking as there is no alternative to that. To the staff, he solicited for their support to his successor. He prayed God to give the University a leader who will be non-sectional so that the peace and stability of the University will be protected.

Dr. Eyisi of the Department of English gave the vote of thanks, thus bringing to an end a wonderful reception.

As participants gathered at the faculty Boardroom Thursday, April 10, 2008 to brainstorm on the theme: MANAGING NIGERIA’S MICRO-BUSINESSES AND SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES (SMES) FOR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, the Professor of Accountancy charged them to think deeply on the attitudinal values of the ordinary Nigerian.

Umebali saw participants drawn from within and outside the University. Many papers were presented during the occasion which dwelt on the sub – themes such as ‘Challenges and Opportunities for Micro Business and SMEs in the global Economy’, ‘Economic Reforms and their Effects on Micro Business and SMEs’, ‘Technology cum Innovation and Micro Businesses, Networking and Regional Co-operations among Micro Businesses and SMEs’, ‘Entrepreneurial Motivation and Behaviour’, ‘Cost Management and Accounting among Micro Businesses and SMEs’, etc

However, the Dean in his address charged the speakers to fashion out ways and means of improving the performance of the Nigerian businesses at the end of their deliberations.

The Chairman of the occasion, Professor F.C. Nze thanked the organizers for choosing him to chair the First National Conference to be held by the Faculty. He affirmed the choice of the theme and prayed for fruitful discussions by the participants.

The conference was intended to provide answer to the challenges, opportunities and prospects of managing Nigeria’s micro businesses and SMEs, as active and competitive participants in the global economy.



The Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in a bid to appreciate and felicitate with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ilochi Okafor, SAN is organizing a valedictory party on the 29 th of April, 2008.

The send-forth party is to hold at the CBN building, Faculty of Education. According to the Unizik Bulletin sources

the occasion will be a way of congratulating and equally appreciating the Vice-Chancellor for his immense contribution towards the upliftment and betterment of this great citadel of learning.

Down Ribbon: Faculty of Engineering To   Fete Vice Chancellor


The Faculty of Engineering is set to organize a send-forth party for the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ilochi Okafor, SAN on Tuesday 15 th April, 2008.

According to the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. E.I.E. Ofodile, the send-forth programme is holding not because of any other thing than that the Staff and Students of the faculty felt the touch of peace in the institution. Presently, there is no cultism clash as it used to be in the past; examination malpractice is at a very low rate; the physical structures of the institution is very befitting and bringing investors into the system are some of his great achievements that deserve appreciation.


Down Ribbon: MICTU - Lots of achievements so far


THE Management Information, Communication and Technology Unit (MICTU) of the office of the Vice-Chancellor has intensified efforts to perform its assigned functions creditably. These achievements which have even attracted the commendation of the Vice-Chancellor include:

  • The marking, sorting and publication of over 20,000 post – UME exam results within 24 hours of the examination
  • Revolutionizing of the marking, and publishing of Semester results, ensuring speed and corruption – proof system of result processing
  • Deployment of fully functional local Area Network (LAN) to all the Units under the Registry and Bursary departments
  • Installation of numerous software programs, and repair of many laptops of University Staff not to mention carrying out of general repairs on “PCs” through out the University
  • Assisted such departments such as the Bursary, Student Affairs, Registry and Academic Planning etc to generate accurate and up-to-date reports on school fees payment, admission lists, and lists of graduands among many other student-related matters.
  • The completion and deployment of staff Information and Management Software. The highly complex program when fully populated is expected to provide a comprehensive data base of all staff details and transactions.


Text Box: UNIZIK Students Charged To Be Steadfast And Law abiding. On the heel of resumption of the Second Semester, the Director of Socials and Welfare of the Students Union Government (SUG) Comrade Onuchukwu Nnadi Henry has in a letter to the returning students dated 31 st March 2008 charged the students to conduct themselves properly in and outside the campus bearing in mind their purpose of being in the school. He further charged them to be law-abiding in all their activities as legitimate grievances should be channeled to the appropriate authority.

Text Box: LAWSA Canteen Comes Alive THE Faculty of Law Canteen earlier closed for about four months has once again come alive. A visit to the Faculty by Unizik bulletin shows the students dinning and winning at the Canteen. The re-opening of the canteen will go a long way in assisting the students to cut down on the time wasted looking outside the campus for eating places. With this development the students can better manage their tight academic schedules.

Text Box: NEW DEPARTMENT In a chat with the adviser in UNIZIK, Associate Professor, Ngozi Egbue, recently, Unizik Bulletin gathered that the organization had two training sessions for our female students in 2005/2006. She said that the representatives of the group led by Chioma Oguegbu was in the University last week to see the Vice-Chancellor on ways to finalise arrangements for their visit in May for the 2007/2008 youth training.

KIND has as its mission ---“to strengthen organizations and create initiatives dedicated to the advancement of women”.

  • LAWSA Inducts New Students: THE First Year Students of the Faculty of Law held their induction ceremony on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the 4 th Year Class Hall.

The ceremony featured the presentation of talks by Barr. (Mrs.) Onyiogali; Barr. O.T.U Onwudinjo; the Staff Legal Adviser, Barr. Obidimma; the Faculty Administration Officer, Dr. Loyce Onyali, and a representative of Fidelity Bank Plc. It was hosted by LAWSA in conjunction with Christian Law Students Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON).

  • Health Sciences Students Holds Its Induction: THE first year students of the Faculty of Health Sciences held its induction ceremony on Wednesday, 9 th April, 2008 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences Conference Room. The Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, various HODs were all in attendance.

The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has approved the establishment of the Department of Food Science and Technology. Though approved in principle, the management intends to meet with the Nigerian Institute of Food and Science Technology to iron out the modalities for smooth take-off of the new department.


Inaugural Lecture

Professor Henry U. Anaso of the Department of Botany will deliver an inaugural lecture on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the University Auditorium by 11.00am. The topic of the lecture is ‘GENETICS AND YOU’.

7 th Convocation Update:


AHEAD of the 7 th Convocation Ceremonies scheduled for April 21 – 26, 2008, the following officers have been notified on the role they will play at the Convocation Lectures scheduled for 24 th and 25 th April, 2008.

They are the University Orator, Ven. Prof. I.C. Okoye; Director of Works Services, Rev. (Engr.) J. Anyachebelu and the Officer in-charge of MICTU, Mr. Chijioke M. Umedum.

Also, the Convocation Committee at its meeting of 3 rd April, 2008 directed the affected departments involved in organizing the 50 Th ANNIVERSARY OF ‘THINGS FALL APART’ to provide as soon as possible all the necessary details on the subjects to the Chairman of the Convocation Committee. The departments are – English and Literature, Philosophy and Theatre Arts.

  • To Receive Ide Tony Nwaka’s Prize


Six students of the Department of History and International Studies are to benefit from the Ide Tony Nwaka’s prize as overall best students at the 7 th Convocation ceremony of the University. Ide Tony Nwaka endowed prizes for the best students in the department. The affected students are for the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 session:

HIGHER DEGREE RESULT

Dr (Mrs.) Ifeyinwa Anolue of the Registry department has been awarded a Ph.D degree in Educational Management and Policy, Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The notification for the award was conveyed to her in a letter NAU/PGS/21/Vol. I dated 18 th March, 2008 by the Secretary of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

THE Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. E.E. Umebali was appointed an External Examiner for a Doctoral candidate in Agricultural Economics of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi. The oral examination took place on Thursday, March 20, 2008.

  • The Vice Chancellor Prof. Ilochi Okafor SAN has approved the appointment of Dr. A.G. Onwuemesi of the Department of Geological Sciences as Acting Head of Department. The appointment is with immediate effect.
  • Prof Luke Anike, former Acting Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies has also been appointed the Acting Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences. The appointment is with immediate effect.

Text Box: EXPULSION - Management at its 179 th meeting held on Monday, 3 rd March, 2008 considered the Report of the Student Disciplinary Committee on a letter from Ndigwe Chukweneka V. of the Department of Physical and Health Education (Reg. No. 200184040) for a review of his case for upgrading and computation of his result.

After examining the role played by him and the other student involved in the case of tampering with the results of Education/English students in the Department of Educational Foundation he was still found guilty.

To this end, the Management’s earlier decision to have him expelled still stands.
