PROF. B.C.E. EGBOKA LEADS CONVOCATION COMMITTEE TO IGWE KENNETH ORIZU

THE Convocation Committee led by its Chairman, Professor Boniface C.E. Egboka on Wednesday, March 20, 2008 paid a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Nnewi Igwe K.O.N. Orizu III. Dr. Dozie Ikedife (Ikenga Nnewi, Traditional Prime Minister) stood in for Igwe who was unavoidably absent due to an official function in Abuja. After the presentation of eight kolanuts with drink to the Igwe and his cabinet, the leader of the delegation, Prof. Egboka told the Igwe’s cabinet the purpose of the visit.

According to Prof. Egboka, ‘the delegation came on behalf of Professor Ilochi Okafor (SAN) to brief you (the Igwe ) on our forthcoming 7 th Convocation”. The Chairman said that the Convocation committee came to brief Igwe in his personal capacity and also in his official capacity as Chairman, Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council. He solicited the support of Igwe, his cabinet, Nnewi people as well as the Traditional Rulers of Anambra State. He however outlined the projects to be commissioned during the convocation as:

  • Prof. Festus Aghagbo Nwako Library
  • The Library Annex
  • Prof. Gordian Ezekwe Building (Faculty of Engineering)
  • Road projects

Also, the foundation laying ceremony of the following projects will equally be performed.

  • Clement Akpamgbo (SAN) building - Faculty of Law
  • Faculty of Education Building
  • Road projects

In his response, the Traditional Prime Minister, Dr. Ikedife thanked them for coming but posed a question to the University: Why can’t Igwe Nnewi be awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree? He reasoned that Igwe Orizu was amply qualified for such honour. According to him, he is one of the longest reigning monarchs in Igbo land and Nigeria (1963 to date). Speaking further, he said that Igwe assisted in attracting the Teaching Hospital to Nnewi and also the College of Health Sciences.

The Ikenga Nnewi also frowned at the way the University handles the case of its Medical Students who after spending up to 9, 10, 11 years in the Medical School are asked to withdraw. He advocated a system where such persons could obtain Bachelor’s degree, having passed the 2 nd and 3 rd MBBS. As a way out, Dr. Ikedife suggested that instead of asking the students to withdraw for failing 5 th MBBS, they could earn a Bachelor’s degree instead of the failed Medical Degree.

The Igwe cabinet also requested for an admission quota based on merit. Also, they called on the Management to consider moving the Teaching Hospital to its permanent site at Nnewi/Oraifite axis because of serious rumours going round that land speculators are preying on the land.

Present during the occasion (UNIZIK delegation) were the Head, Public Relations, Communication and Marketing, Mr Emmanuel C. Ojukwu and secretary, Meg Abana. On the Igwe’s cabinet were Chief Edwin Ejikeme, Chief Edwin Nwabunwanne Ike, Chief Nnanyelu Edwin (Secretary of Royal Cabinet) Chief Nwadialor Okeke, Chief Christopher Nzewi, Chief Gab Obinna and Chief Ezulike Achusiuba.

Prof. Egboka later signed the visitor’s register.
