RIPPLES OVER ADMISSION QUOTA FOR AWKA INDIGENES

There are ripples over accusations that admission quota of Awka indigene in the last few years was misapplied by Dr A.U. Nnonyelu, a Reader in the department of Sociology and Anthropology. This came to the fore during the valedictory visit of Awka indigenes to the former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ilochi Okafor, SAN led by Prof. A.I. Agbata and Ven. Prof. B.C. Okeke. The Awka indigenes in UNIZIK complained to the former Vice-Chancellor that Awka had not been getting their due admission quota in the last couple of years. They said they were moved to complain because the outgoing VC would make a recommendation to the incoming VC.

Prof. Okafor while thanking the Awka indigenes for their support and prayers during his tenure informed them that all along the University had been handing over Awka admissions quota to Dr. A.U. Nnonyelu, an Awka indigene in Unizik. He reiterated that Awka as capital of Anambra State and the University host will continue to get its due admission quota. He however added that if the ones allocated in the past which Dr. A.U. Nnonyelu collected did not get to them, he assured them that this time the University Management will consult the Awka indigenes in Unizik and make sure the list is utilized in the best interest of Awka indigenes.

The Unizik bulletin later interviewed Prof. Ven. B.C. Okeke who is the new Director of Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies COCES. Prof. Okeke expressed dismay that allocation given to a town cannot be cornered by one person without informing other Awka indigenes in the University. Also, Prof. A.I. Agbata, Provost, College of Health Sciences, Nnewi was worried that Dr. A.U. Nnonyelu ought to have informed them about the admission allocation. Other Awka indigenes in the entourage include Prof. Emesi Katchy, Emma Nwosu, Philip Nwanna, Francis Ejete, Prof. P.N. Anagbogu, Louisa Adum-Allen, Collins Okafor, Uche Ebeze among others.

UNIZIK MEDICAL STUDENTS FOR CLINICAL STUDIES ABROAD

THE Chief Executive Officer of the AFAM Medical Hospital and the facilitator of the Clinical rotation studies for Medical Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Dr Ifeanyi Obiakor has stressed the importance of having high emotional intelligence as a key to success.

Dr Obiakor made the assertion at the Council Chamber during the briefing of the 4 th batch of Medical Students who will be traveling to the United States in August for the clinical rotation course. For the students to succeed, he remarked, they must be proactive and not reactionary. He charged them to be polite and always drop a tinge of smile to sail through. According to the CEO of the largest minority owned healthcare group in America, the hallmark of success in life is not academic intelligence, but possession of high emotional intelligence. Dr Obiakor told them to emulate the footprints of the likes of Dr Uwadiegwu and Ezemenari who remained the stars of the programme. As the 4 th batch, he believed their job will be a little bit easier as the American government has affirmed their understanding of the good conduct of the students. He later recommended three inspirational books for them to serve as a tonic for their determination, namely, the seven habits of highly effective people, the power of positive thinking by Norman Pearle and Emotional Intelligence by Godman. Dr. Obiakor stressed that great achievers are those with high emotional intelligence, that is, who think before they speak. He later called on the students to undergo mandatory ICT training so as to adapt to the programme.

Earlier in his brief speech, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. B.C.E. Egboka charged the students to go to the US and experience what they are doing. He assured them of the University support as well as requesting them to be of good conduct.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Sam Omenyi in his remarks thanked the facilitator of the programme Dr. Ifeanyi Obiakor. He called on the students to be of good conduct as that is the only thing they could give to Dr Okiakor, Prof. Omenyi told them that the American government is regarding the “Clinical rotation course” as a national issue; hence the trust American Embassy at Abuja has on letters emanating from the University. Again, he expressed the feeling that the crop of students being selected would be in a better position to go for the programme. He said that for the first ten to pay, a ballot will be drawn for them to determine who goes to Afam Medical Hospital or New York Methodist Hospital.

In his own address the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. M.C. Nwosu called on the students to continue reading their books so as to perform well at the final MBBS examination. He charged them also to apply themselves to what is relevant to their programme while in the United States. He described the programme as a laudable one.

It will be recalled that the third batch of the medical students have since returned to the country. Again, while in the US, the students are expected to undergo training in General Surgery, Emergency medicine, Internal medicine Gynaecology, Paediatrics, etc. The students, numbering thirteen were later asked to give background information on their person to enable the facilitator plan for their visit effectively

Tuesday 27 th May 2008, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. B.C.E. Egboka conducted an inspection of some of the on-going projects in the university in the company of some members of Management and the staff of Physical Planning Unit. The team later returned to the Administration Building after the inspection.

CHIKE OKOLI FOUNDATION AT TWO

Background

The Chike Okoli Foundation was established in 2006 to further the ideals of Chike Edward Okoli who died from undetected coronary artery disease, five days after his 25sth birthday. Until his death, Chike was the Founder/Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Carden Energy Services Ltd; an oil servicing company in Lagos, Nigeria. Chike’s untimely departure left his family in grief and so much pain. Thus, they set up the Chike Okoli Foundation to promote the passion of his life (Entrepreneurship) and to combat the cause of his death (Cardiovascular Diseases).

The VISION of the Chike Okoli Foundation therefore is that every young Nigerian will be:

  • Equipped with Entrepreneurial skills to support the building of a healthy and prosperous nation.
  • Fully aware of the causes of cardiovascular Diseases

Again, the mission of the Foundation is to foster lifestyle adjustments and an entrepreneurial culture among Nigerians by promoting business education and creating awareness about Heart and Health.

The event was used as a medium to showcase all the activities of the foundation since its establishment in 2006. The Foundation has organized various cardiovascular health awareness campaigns since inception with the help of health professionals (Cardiologists, Pharmacists, and Dieticians) as well as motivated medical students from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

In September, 2007, the Foundation organized a weeklong programme to mark the World Heart Day with the theme “Care for your heart”. The programme was organized in collaboration with 300 Pharmacists from the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ASPN) Lagos State Chapter.

In December 2007, the Foundation entered into partnership with three media houses namely, the SUN Newspaper, the Vanguard Newspaper and Pharmanews (a leading Pharmaceutical journal in Nigeria) to publish heart related activities on monthly basis.

The Foundation in its 2008 awareness campaign on health has decided to focus on cardiovascular disease. To this end, they organized the first edition of the campaign series at the Lagos State Polytechnic on the 25 th of March, 2008. The event was organized in collaboration with the Students Affairs Unit of LASPOTECH. It featured a talk show on various aspects of cardiovascular health.
